Currently, Tata Steel UK operates two coal powered blast furnaces with 4,000 workers at the UK’s largest steelworks in Port Talbot. However, due to financial losses amounting to £160m in the past three months – around £1.7m a day – the company plans to close both its blast furnaces in Port Talbot with the expected loss of 3,000 jobs UK-wide. In the recent past, the company has committed to investing £750m in a new electric arc furnace in Port Talbot in the near future with a £500m subsidy from the UK government. The company still plans to adhere to this commitment, but the workers are worried about their immediate future.
