To become climate neutral, energy-efficient and more competitive in the digital age, the EU will need more metals. The EP therefore proposes an EU strategy to boost EU’s strategic autonomy and resilience regarding the supply of critical raw materials based on sustainable sourcing and high environmental, social and human rights standards.

Under the Parliament’s proposals, more CRMs will have to be sourced from within the EU and its neighbourhood, sources for these materials will need to be diversified, and more research should focus on sustainable alternatives to these scarce materials.
